It can be very frustrating. There are so many letters I never got a response from But it can take a while, I received one of Omar Sharif about 2 years after I send my letter.

As for Harry Potter stars. I wrote to the great Miriam Margolyes (professor Sprout) early september (I think). Got a reply after only a few weeks. I send to John Cleese years ago and think it didn't take long that either (he only send a piece of paper though, no picture or anything).

I've heard Julie Walters replies quickly I'm sending to her soon.
