My nephew encountered Depp after a week's location shooting near Chicago, during the production of 'Public Enemies.' A number of fans had gathered in the hope of picking up some work as extras and/or meeting the actor. And when the location broke up late after the final day of shooting, Depp came out to talk with the dozen or so fans who had remained until nearly midnight for a chance to see the actor.
Depp was accompanied by his manager, who explained to the fans that the only restriction was that Depp unfortunately could not sign any autographs. The reason was that, once he began signing, it would be difficult to stop, and the actor needed to be on another location within hours. With that solitary restriction, Depp was completely accessable to the fans for over an hour, posing for photos, chatting, imparting encouraging words to aspiring actors.
The actor was courteous, polite, good-natured, and very patient with the people who sought him. I've seen my nephew's photos of the encounter, and clearly the actor is having a great time interacting with his fans. Difficult to believe that Depp was 45-years-old or so at the time of the encounter.
I love hearing stories like that, so I wanted to pass it along.
