Years ago in 1958, I was in the Olympia cinema in the eastend of Glasgow.. the film was Ice Cold In Alex with John Mills and Sylvia Syms.. At the interval before the big movie, the break seemed to last longer than usual. then we found out why.. we heard rustling from the back of the stalls and looking round a vision appeared, it was Sylvia Syms herself dressed in a long ball gown in a pale silk, with matching stole.. she looked beautiful. I sat stunned and couldnt believe what I was seeing... She passed where we were sitting and went round the side of the stage via an exit door and got up on the stage... She spoke for a good 20 to 30 mins. telling us about her new husband who did judo... As a 12 year old I was mesmerised.. Now Im helping a historian with this cinemas history as it is being opened soon as a boxing school of excellence, library. shops and offices soon... and the owners want all the memories of when it was both a music hall and cinema up until the early 70s.... Ive since contacted Miss Syms asking her if she remembers this visit and why she was in Glasgow at that time... Ill keep you all posted..
