Rooney begun his football career at the Everton youth team. His childhood hero was striker Duncan Ferguson. However he would only play two seasons at Everton, before a transfer. When at Everton in the season of 2002, he scored a memorable goal against Premiership winners Arsenal, from 10 yards outside the penalty area, kicking it into the top left hand corner of the goal. This last minute goal assured Everton’s victory against Arsenal. It was just five days to his 17th birthday, making him the youngest goal scorer at the Premiership at that point of time.
Rooney’s debut for Manchester United in the September of 2004 in the UEFA Champions League was an outstanding one, scoring a hat-trick and making an assist. He was moved to a stronger position by Alex Ferguson, behind van Nistelrooy as a second striker. He was also the youngest player to play for the national team against Australia, in 2003 in a friendly match. Rooney made an impressive performance at Euro 2004. He was regarded as one of the most exciting young players to watch out for, because his game improved drastically within a few short seasons.
Rooney suffered a broken metatarsal in a challenge with Paulo Ferreira in the 2006 Premier league game between Manchester United and Chelsea. This would prove to be crucial before the commencement of the FIFA World Cup that year. However making a substitute against Trinidad and Tobago, he made a very good recovery. However that World Cup would disappoint him and his teammates, when England crashed out in the quarter finals, playing against Portugal. The match was decided by penalties, with Rooney missing the net against Portugal’s Ricardo Carvalho.
