I mailed a letter to General Powell, a self addressed stamped envelope and a blank bookplate. I mailed this to him on June 26, 2012. On July 23, 2012, I received an autographed bookplate from him in his own envelope, not my SASE. It was also not my bookplate that I mailed, It was a bigger one with CLP on the top. It was signed in what looks like a black sharpie. A great success from a great American! The return address was:

I have compared the signature to some in person book signatures I found online, they are identical. I am very pleased with this one!

On 4/9/12, I wrote retired US Army General (and former Secretary of State) Colin Powell with a TTM autograph request, enclosing SSAE and 3x5 card for signing. Got his reply today, 7/1/12, with my 3x5 signed "C.L. Powell." This is 1 of 3 received today. Address used is in the fanmail.biz database and is below.
