I think this isn't very true. I collect only for my love of the movies the actors star in. I NEVER sell any of my collections and i have been collecting things since I was 5. Sentimental value IMO is more valuable than monetary

I collect only for fun. Not gain.

Sometimes sentimental value overrides the monetary value. Collections don't necessarily have to be worth something.
