I believe Mr Wilder was not told his cancer was in remission until Spring 2005, so he may have understandably shied away from the public during the period he was being treated. I personally believe he enjoyed meeting his fans so much when he did all the book store signings of his biography and subsequent fiction that it led to him signing through the mail again, as he did sign a lot after that.
I had the pleasure of meeting him in London on 07th June 2005 when he signed at Waterstones Piccadilly in London. It was a dream come true for me as he has long been one of my all time favourite actors. His eyes really do have the intense bright blueness you see in the films. A lovely man and a very funny man, but his biography is sad reading at times.
