mail tricks

Hey,

My english teacher told me its best to write the addresses in black pen because the postal machine recognizes them better. She also said that its better to write abbreviations on the envelope, eg- NJ instead of New Jersey, or ST instead of Street. Anyone know if thats true, or have any other tips?
