In his final, emaciated form, Gollum is "played" in the Lord of the Rings films by a CGI character whose movements are at times derived from a motion-capture suit worn by Andy Serkis, and otherwise from footage of him interacting with the other actors that was digitally replaced. But the final film in the trilogy afforded Andy the chance to appear in person in a flashback scene playing Sméagol before his degradation into Gollum. Co-screenwriter Fran Walsh directed the scene, as Peter Jackson was unavailable.

The city of Minas Tirith, glimpsed briefly in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, is seen fully in this film. The filmmakers took great care to base its design closely upon Tolkien's original description. Close-ups of the city were represented by sets and long shots by the most detailed miniature built for the trilogy, often populated by CGI characters. Interestingly, the set was built from Helm's Deep, with that's set's gate becoming Minas Tirith's second, the entrance of the great hall becoming the scene of Gandalf's confrontation with the Witch-King and the Hornburg tower becoming one of many in Minas Tirith. Also built was the main gate, with the two doors built twice: the broken and unbroken versions.

The 2003 pick ups were filmed in a Wellington car park, with many parts of sets and bluescreens used to finish off scenes. Notable among new scenes was the reshot Witch-king with revised design, and the inclusion of new Orc Gothmog.

In his final, emaciated form, Gollum is "played" in the Lord of the Rings films by a CGI character whose movements are at times derived from a motion-capture suit worn by Andy Serkis, and otherwise from footage of him interacting with the other actors that was digitally replaced. But the final film in the trilogy afforded Andy the chance to appear in person in a flashback scene playing Sméagol before his degradation into Gollum. Co-screenwriter Fran Walsh directed the scene, as Peter Jackson was unavailable.

The city of Minas Tirith, glimpsed briefly in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, is seen fully in this film. The filmmakers took great care to base its design closely upon Tolkien's original description. Close-ups of the city were represented by sets and long shots by the most detailed miniature built for the trilogy, often populated by CGI characters. Interestingly, the set was built from Helm's Deep, with that's set's gate becoming Minas Tirith's second, the entrance of the great hall becoming the scene of Gandalf's confrontation with the Witch-King and the Hornburg tower becoming one of many in Minas Tirith. Also built was the main gate, with the two doors built twice: the broken and unbroken versions.

The 2003 pick ups were filmed in a Wellington car park, with many parts of sets and bluescreens used to finish off scenes. Notable among new scenes was the reshot Witch-king with revised design, and the inclusion of new Orc Gothmog.
