I didn't know about an Oliver one! I'm guessing Cameron Mackintosh????? LOL
Legally Blonde does have a story. It's actually a rather good one. The musical has been called "empty calories," "Cotton candy," "fluff," etc. though!
Overall story:
Elle Woods (title character) is a senior at UCLA (a university here in California) who "hass everything she wants" whatever with a boyfriend that is going to Harvard Law School in the fall (in Boston..I'm guessing you know that one!), and she believes that he is going to propose to him. When he ends up breaking up with her like 15 minutes into the play (same sort of for the movie), Elle decides "what she wants" is to follow him to Harvard. Fast forward when she gets in, she finds out Warner has a girlfriend, who is nasty to Elle (Vivienne). After this it differs from the movie & musical! But in short of Act 1, no one takes her seriously (thus Legally BLONDE), except Emmet a teacher-aide/person-like who then after she is mocked by Viviienne at a party that she tells Elle is a costume party; Elle decides to actually show up Warner to try to win him back still. After a victiourous classroom victory against him, four people are selected for the internship of their teacher. Vivienne, Warner, Enid (Vivienne's friend/a Lesbian [LOL ranodm plot detail????]), and ... ELLE! (So Much Better).
Act II opens with a suspected murderess Brooke Wyndam, who is actually a Delta Nu (Elle's sorioty back at UCLA) and the only one she trusts is Elle with her embarassing aliby, which would threaten her business (workout tapes). Bunch of random plot twists/what not as much as Act II is the trial, Elle actually becomes the lawyer in charge as opposed to intern!, more plot, then ends at graduation.
I tried to eliminate most of the spoilers/not a complete synopsis. Just about 95% of the people over ehre have seen the movie! Like there's a main character named Paulette who owns a beauty Salon that Elle is frequently at. Heard of the "Bend & Snap"? LOL
It's really catchy/jumpy but not in a bad way (Honestly, I'm just about NEVER a fan of these type of musicals...I'm into like EVITA, Woman in White, A Tale of Two Cities (new one over here that doenst look like itll last!), Les Mis, Jekyll & HYDE, The Scarlet Pimpernel (although the latter two are a little pop-y!), and most of ALW's works! The lyrics aren't anything that great, but there just kind of funny and it's all-around one of those "feel-good" shows. I suprisingly haven't ran into too many peopel who haven't liked it. Most (somewhat like me) recognize it for what it is!, and some of the awful stuff to it (mostly lyric wise...OMIGOD You Guys is one of the songs!), but it really is a nice, care-free piece that will really have you forget your worries for those 2.5 hours!
It's actually just about all on YouTube.com. It was filmed, "live" for MTV showing around this time last year...while the show was(& still is right now) on Broadway. First time (and probably the last) that that EVER happened, while the show was still on. My fav: Jekyll & HYDE was filmed with David Hasselhoff but like most are released AFTER they closed. (LB is NOT on DVD, just illegally recorded/whatnot from the MTV showing and others!).
