It's not weird at all. Studios and agencies send each other tons of mail/correspondence/memos. I'm sure they've dealt with fanmail before, but whether or not they forward or dump the mail is up to them. They were of course in contact with his people/agent/manager/publicist before the appearance. Even if they were not, they could have simply given it to his publicist the day of the appearance, and he/she (more likely a woman, since most publicists I have ever seen are women) would simply send it off to the appropriate fanmail handler.
