I also send my letter at the beginning of September and recieved a reply from Daniel Craig on the 15th, and mail from the US to Germany takes usually up to seven day. So I would guess he signed my request before the actually play started. The actors don't just arrive on the day the play officially starts they usually there a couple of days earlier for practice. And from
experience I can tell you, that it is better to be the first one to write, becauce usually chances are higher that you recieve a reply.
