At the end of the day it's your letter and the wording should come from your heart - but as an example you could try something like :

Dear Ms. Hudson

(Introduce yourself)

I'm writing to express my grief at what happened to your family. As a loyal fan of yours, I cannot explain how sorry I am that you have to go through this, and I just want you to know that my thoughts (or prayers - if you're religious) are with you. I wish to send my most sincere condolences to yourself and your relatives......
