You put stamps on the outer envelope (or it won't go anywhere), and you put stamps on the SASE.

Many US actors and actresses will send large photo like 8X10, so I normally send 9x12 envelopes as my SASE. But there are many UK stars who send 4x6 photos so you only need a regular sized envelope or 6X9. If the person you are writing has feedback on this site, check and see what size photo they send.

Bonnie, it's a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

Basically, when you send a letter to a celebrity asking them to send you an autograph, you should include an envelope with your request, addressed to you and with enough postage on it for the autograph to be returned to you.

Besides being the polite thing to do, an SASE tends to improve your chances of getting an answer as the celebrity does not have to do a lot of work to send it.

I have no idea what a SASE is. I'm brand-new to this and I've never herd of a SASE.

Yeah, I've always sent SASE, with sports cards (and the like) I always send the request in a regular size envelope and a smaller envelope for the return.

I'm with Stan...don't send a request unless you can pay for return postage. If the celeb is already paying to send his/her own photo (they do cost $$, you know), the least we can do when requesting one is to pay for the return postage. I got lucky when I was 10-12 years old writing to a few celebs, but I wouldn't dream of writing now without sending a SASE or IRCs, if I'm sending overseas. I've sent out only two requests this month because that's all I could afford to send with SASEs.

I would never write without an SASE, and for the success rate you are likely to achieve without doing that you might as well save yourself the walk to the postbox and stick it straight in the recycled paper bin.

I'm not well off, there have been times in my life when I've not been able to afford to buy a loaf of bread, so understand what it is to have no money at all. In those times I would just not have sent letters to people, or if I felt that driven would have found a means of acquiring some stamps. I can understand not being able to afford to send letters out, but if you can afford to prioritise what you have for the postage to get it there then I don't quite see how you can't work out a way to get the return postage together as as well.

I agree with all the users who have replied to this thread.
Yes, sending an SASE is always recommended as a polite, convenient way for a celebrity to get back to you.

SASE is much more polite. However, some people will still reply with just an LOR.

Even if you send an SASE, (or if you don't) put your address on the letter.
I've seen people and it's happened to me where they mix up requests and you get the wrong photo/ your photo gets sent to someone else's address.

Hope this helps you. {up}
