EastendersFan, one of my local post offices has just been fitted with some
Post & Go machines (self-service). I don't know if you have them where you are, but it means you don't have to go anywhere near a counter, unless you need an IRC or special delivery or whatever. These machines give out stamps too.
If you are going to the counter, though, just hold the envelope up so they can see where it's going and then they'll ask you to pop it on the scale. Works for me.

They'll give you loose stamps or a sticky label and might give you an airmail sticker as well.
