1st class large are worth 61p each. They can be used for large letters (Length: 353mm max, Width: 250mm max, Thickness: 25mm max, Weight: 750g max).
Just to clarify: if you are using these stamps for INTERNATIONAL mail, different rules apply. You do not need to use "large" stamps for "large" items, nor do 1st class arrive faster than 2nd class. All you need to worry about is the monetary value of the stamps i.e. 39p for regular 1st class stamps, 61p for the large ones (making sure you have enough to cover the cost calculated by the weight).
For Airmail, the only rules are : Length, width and depth combined must not be greater than 900mm, the greatest single dimension must not exceed 600mm. Price depends on country of destination and weight (which cannot exceed 2kg). Prices are here
