Images that are copyrighted are often stated in it's IPTC metadata or simply watermarked onto the image itself. Though, even if an image file has neither, it might still be copyrighted since the metadata could have been modified or removed by someone else.
But even if images are copyrighted, most photo printing companies don't really bother checking if it is, so you can get away with it. Sorta like downloading MP3s and movies.
