Um, maybe a little odd...not disrespectful. There are a couple of people who send request to some of the high ranking officials and people who had a significant experience during the war. I think instead of sending an autograph request to them, you should just send a thank you letter. I don't think you need to collect their autographs, but thats just me.
On this note, I believe anytime you see someone who fought in WW2...you should stop and thank them.
