You don't get a charged for putting "Please do not bend" on an envelope. You usually get a the additional fee for sending an envelope that is "rigid", which the USPS charges an additional fee because it has to be hand sorted and not machine sorted.
I have found that some Post Offices are more easy going then others. There are about 10 Post Offices within 5 minutes of me (yes thats is why stamps are so expensive-- one large one would be fantastic) one is amazing and that is the one I usually go to. 2 of them are horrible and just don't know anything about their job and 2 go exactly by the book and love to charge additional fees and even custom forms for requests abroad. I don't frequent those anymore.
