I tend to do a mix, most of the time i will address it using their first name. However, sometimes (and i cannot explain why) it feels right that it should be addressed Dear Mr/Ms etc... most recently this was with Alan Rickman, where 'Dear Alan' just didnt sound right or respectful.

However, I have had success repeatedly using both methods

I write their full name {up}

Personally, on the actual envelope I put Mr/Mrs/Ms etc.

However, in the actual letter I like to have it as Dear <First Name>, as I like to write in a more casual tone.

Ive had success both ways, I usually use first names, but for the older celebs I have used Mr.

If they're adults i put mr. or mrs.
