You could use domestic 50c stamps to send letters overseas, but it would be best to use stamps for International mail (these can also be bought from Australia Post).
To send a A4 sized envelope from Australia to the US or UK, it would cost about $4.00 in 50c stamps (8 stamps). Should you do the same using the international stamps, it would cost about $3.60 (2 x $1.80 stamps). Australia Post has a policy that if you use domestic stamps for international mail, you have to add an extra 10% of the cost of sending the same envelope using international stamps

A regular, standard envelope (up to the size of 130mm x 240mm - about 1/3 of the A4 envelope) sent to the US or UK would cost about $1.80 in international stamps or $2.00 in domestic stamps (4 x 50c stamps).
I note that these prices are for an envelope up to 50 grams in weight.
