The stamps they'll use to mail it out at the post office will say '98' and will have a small airplane icon in the corner, which means it will be going air mail to get to the UK.
Around $3.00 is good for return postage as the exachange rate is a bit higher coming from the UK to the USA.
I just tell them that I'm unable to get IRC's in my area and that I've enclosed a couple dollars to help cover the cost of return postage. Done this many times and have gotten many successes back & sometimes with a note thanking me for enclosing the cash for return postage.
