Handwrite the letter, be sincere, express what their work means to you.

And as for asking for personalisation, I ask in the letter, and then also put a sticky note on the back of the photo that says "If possible, could you please personalise to ____?" in case it gets overlooked.

Generally by asking for personalisation you make it clear you're not a dealer, so that should help. Good luck!
