Each IRC can be redeemed for £0.87 here in the UK.
If your comic is in an envelope I would class it as letters, if it's a jiffy bag then it's going to be small packet/printed papers.
What you could do is look on the Autograph Exchange/Sale forum for someone who is selling/trading UK stamps. You could ask if they would get £1 stamps for you, or 1st which are worth £0.60 or 2nd which are worth £0.50, and put on enough to cover the postage cost. A little extra never hurts in case it takes a long time to come back and the prices go up (annualy in April). £1 will still be worth £1 and 1st/2nd are just like forever stamps, so whatever the current price is, that's the value, regardless of what you bought them for.
Yes, international mail does have different rules to domestic. Domestic is size and weight whereas international is weight and has two size catagories.
