That's what I do, especially for athletes I want signed. I am very picky about the photo and clarity. I go to Google and image search the player, and make sure the image size is "Large" so I know the resolution will be great. I then print it off in 8x10 size from home and stuff it in the envelope with cardboard, letter, self addressed stamped envelope, and a Sharpie (most don't include the Sharpie, but I do for convenience for them. I figure if they're doing me a favor by signing it, the least I can do is provide the pen).
For instance, I sent to Travis Hafner, designated hitter for the Cleveland Indians baseball team. I had the photo in mind I wanted was the game my wife and I were at where he hit the walk-off grand slam. I Googled that photo in Large size, printed it off and sent it out. I think it makes the autograph more meaningful because my wife and I were actually at that game. When I sent out to Eric Church, country music singer, I Googled a Large photo from the concert my wife and I attended in April.
