The wait is probably the most annoying (and most exciting) part of the hobby. You do need to be patient, although if you do you feel your mail got lost, misplaced or ignored you could always send again. I've seen some requests take as long as 9 years before they finally return signed.
Did you send photos? Did you send a SASE? Some celebrities don't even bother to reply - or just give you a pre-print or secretarial - if you don't send your own photo.
When I started collecting I sent short letters, just stating my name, age and state I live in. Then I told the person why I liked their movies/music/whatever, or what I liked about them, or something that made me like their work in the first place. Then I requested the autograph, and ended it with something like "Thanks for reading this short note - have a nice day!" Nowadays I try to elaborate on all of that and try to put a lot more effort into my letters and make it fill up at least a page. How long does yours have to be? I think as long as you say what you feel and want to say it really doesn't have a limit - just don't make it sound like you're just want their autograph, and nothing else.
