You have to look around the internet, also in-person successes. Compare them and see how they are similar

1) Preprints, stamps and autopens will match 100% to previous successes. If they match, you know its not authentic. Remember that a preprint will have the autograph in exactly the same place on each photo. Autopens can be in the same place OR anywhere on the photo, and some celebs use several different versions (Johnny Depp has at least 3, for example). Stamps are pretty easy to detect, and can be anywhere on the photo.

2) Once you've disregarded the possibility of the above, it falls into one of 2 categories, either authentic, or secretarial. There is a thread in the "Is my autograph authentic?" forum listing all known/suspected secretarial senders. If the celeb is listed, theres a very high probability its secretarial. If the celeb is not listed, theres still a chance its secretarial, the list is not complete. (Dont buy into the "the TTM looks like IP so its real" argument, its a secretaries job to sign the autographs, and some have been doing it for 5, 10, 20+ years)

3) A lot of confusion can be avoided simply by checking what the celeb has been sending, If they've been sending autopens for years, then the celeb wont see your letter, and you have close to 0% chance of receiving anything other than an authentic. Do your research first, and then you shouldnt be disappointed if you receive a PP etc.

Compare yours to other successes. If its different, then you know it isn't PP or Autopen.

Compare to in person successes. If it's close, then I would say it isn't secretarial.

Check the history of the celebrity. Are they known to send out pp/ap/secretarial? That should help you out.

Obviously if you sent your own picture and got it signed, then you know it is not a PP. If you sent more than 2 photos and the signature is different on both, then you know it isn't AP either.

I hope I helped a little bit :]
