Americans, as any nationality, will most certainly reply to you no matter where you are in the world. A minority will only reply if you provide return postage, but on the whole, I've never paid return postage for
any of my requests, and have received tons of autographs back. However, I would say that it is essential to at least include a self-addressed envelope for the return.
Um, on another point, are you by any chance South African too?

just noticing the affection towards Immelman's autograph, and we're the only lot that usually say 'hey' upon completing our sentences
