I usually address this question towards the end of my letter and it is NEVER the bulk of my letter! Saying your an autograph collector is a no no. You could have a very persoanl letter, then you throw it out there that you collect autographs, and it goes from personal straight to business  I wouldn't recommend saying that...

I agree, never say you're an autograph collector. They don't know the extent of that, whether you write to every Tom, Dick or Harry or whether you just write to those you admire. I always begin the letter saying that I'm a huge fan, how long I've been a fan, how I discovered them etc. My penultimate paragraph is usually something like "I realise that you are very busy but if you could have the time, it would mean so much to me if you could sign the photo/CD insert/DVD insert I've included with my letter. Thank you so much."

After I tell the celebrtie what movies I've seen them in or what I like about them or whatever. I usually say "I was wondering if you could please send me an autographed picture, that would be greatly appreciated and very cool" Then before I put that I've started telling them to of my hobbies which are collecting DVDs and writing to celebrities and them I ask them if they have any hobbies and or favorite movie and or genre of movie. I don't put that I'm a collector, would saying I write to celebrities be bad?

First paragraph is always about why I like them, or started watching/listening to them, in detail, so they know I'm not BSing them.

I usually say something about collecting as a future keepsake for my kids. Then, "...and I would love/really like to have yours in the collection. So if it's not too big a hassle and you don't care, could you please sign my _____? I would really appreciate it and the boys will, too...when they get a little older."

Then thank them for the time and wish them the best
