Sorry to bump this topic, but it caught my attention. I live in Michigan & just recently started working for the post office in my town and surprisingly we get alot of misdirected mail from other states like Florida - Montana - Indiana - Texas - South Carolina and several others!!
We cross out the small black & red barcodes on the front & back and send it back out. Others sadly get tossed in the trash if it keeps coming back to us. so it's a good idea to make sure you get the address correct the first time, because each time we have to re-mail it, there's more chance of it getting caught in the sorting machine and ultimately destoryed.
in the bigger post offices, they have what's called "The Dead letter room". This room is typically where any unclaimed mail goes and also the letters to Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny and other imaginary characters who addresses don't even exist.
It's also a good idea to make sure you apply the proper postage and not re-use stamps, as they have a tendancy to get pulled off and if it arrives without stamps it get's tossed or put in the dead letter room.
So just a couple things I've learned since working for the USPS.
