I have 34 HOFers which I mostly got through the mail (names could be viewed under forum I started 'Calling all BB HOF Collectors). In addition to these, I have a book called 'The Dodgers Encyclopedia' which I've gotten signed by about 50 current and former Dodger players. All autographs
were in person. Most of the players were little known, but some of the notables I've gotten were Ron Cey, Davey Lopes, Steve Garvey, Bill Russell, Duke Snider, and Maury Wills.
I mostly collect baseball cards-as it's the cheapest form. I have about 100 signed cards. Some of the more notable names I've gotten via the mail are Bud Harrelson, Tug McGraw, Ron Swoboda, and Mike Piazza (these are all former NY Mets 'heroes'). Tommy Davis, Tommy La Sorda, Steve Garvey, and Fernando Valenzuela (these are all former Brooklyn/LA Dodgers heroes).
In addition to these I've gotten Johnny Damon, Carlos Delgado, Jim Edmonds, Tom Glavine, Chipper Jones, and Edgar Martinez. I find for mail collecting the best results are if you send the card when the players are either rookies (this is hit or miss) or when they are past their prime/retired. When they are at the peak of their careers most superstars will not sign.
