How to recognize an RTS

It isn't just me but we are all wondering what the markings on our envelopes mean when they come back as an RTS. I recently got 1 and I unsure about whats on it. The adress and stamps are crossed out, it says return to sender, there's a red stamp and some black markings. In this thread I would like to know what they all mean and how we can all not have an RTS in the future! Thanks!
