I just use a normal kitchen scale to weigh my letter and then imput the resulting weight into usps.com (go to "calulate postage" and enter the size and weight to get the price).

Recently I've only gone to the postoffice when I am low on stamps.

Yes, you can purchase postal scales from stores, but only thing is you have to keep the little chips inside updated if the stamp prices go up and those can be pricey.
