I haven't sent either, just a book, but the experience should be the same: ALWAYS sent something for its return trip, if you want it back. Best bet is (if you're in the US), use an appropriate-sized flat rate priority mailer as the return box, so you can print out postage and also have it addressed to you. Put the item in it, along with a roll of tape. Then write a letter of request, put that in an envelope addressed (but NOT stamped) to the person and tape it on top of the return postage. Then wrap the whole thing in paper - back of gift wrap or brown paper works - and address that to the person and take it to the post office to mail.
This way, the person gets the package, rips off the outer wrapping, opens the envelope with your directions and requests, signs the item, puts it in the return box and either has the mail carrier pick it up or drops it off at the post office or mailroom. The roll of tape, which the person keeps, is for them to seal up the return mailer. If you have a special pen, enclose that as well.
Makes it easy for them - and more importantly, for the next person who requests their autograph. Because if the process is painless (relatively), they're more willing to sign for the next person.
