I think it's a good idea but should be done in the form of a heartfelt letter.
Also, address the envelope to "assistant" or "secretary" along with the stars name. If they don't see that and they don't read the letter, they'll never know what your request is. Even go as far as to put a post it note on your item.
I recently sent a similar request to the assistant of a notorious secretarial user/non-signer. I will let you know if I get any response.
I put a post it on the item "Mr/Ms. celebrity's name only, please sign"
I addressed the envelope "Attn: personal assistant (above) Mr/Ms. celebrity's name and then address"
Then I sent a one page typed letter explaining how I appreciate the stars talent, I appreciate that no star owes a fan, I understand their normal ttm responses may be signed by the assistant but if an exception could be made, I would most appreciate an authentic response.
I've been lucky with secretarials, in being able to obtain real ones afterwards but only because of book signings or conventions.
Tony Curtis, Carrie Fisher and Richard Dreyfuss did signing conventions, Jerry Lewis and Sylvester Stallone did book signings, though with Jerry they were "pre signed." Also bought Charlton Heston signed book from Nixon library.
I am also sending in for the Dick Van Dyke private signing, where I KNOW I will be getting a REAL autograph.
