No, 1st and 2nd class, normal UK stamps cannot be used to send letters abroad. For sending abroad, you need to go to your local post office and they'll sort it out.

How much does a 1st class stamp worth, and can it be used for international postage.
For example, how many 1st class stamp would it take to send a letter (20g) to Hong Kong?
