I usually make the first paragraph about them and how their work has affected/inspired me.
Second paragraph goes close to this:
"My sons, Justin and Jeremiah (5 & 3) are growing up, so before they get too big, I'm building them an autograph collection of my favorite musicians, athletes and celebrities-a little keepsake that Dad has put some time into, you know- and I'd love to add yours! So if it's not a problem, could you please sign my picture for us (or 'could I please have your autograph for us', if I don't send anything)? I would really appreciate it and so will they...in a few years, of course.
Thanks so much for your time, and your work, and have a great Summer!"
Something to that affect. Obviously, if you don't have kids, you can't use that

but it may give you ideas. Never hurts to add
why you collect autographs!
Good luck
Clint
