I don't have this problem very often as I'm heavily in to vintage movies and most older film stars (those no longer in the limelight) are happy to sign autographs.
If I do recieve a pp or ap it goes straight in the bin. I would rather get an RTS so that I can use my sase to write to another celebrity.

same here manu80 i don't treat a pp or ap as a success even though i posted my fabregas and van persie pre prints a success. i do generally keep all of the things i receive but i only frame the authentic ones i get, pp and ap will all go into a envelope and put away and as for secretarials they would probably go in the bin even though i havent received one......yet

Hi,

I treat an autopen/PP/sec- as a reply, but not a sucess. But I still think we should respect what others think, even if we do not accept it. Just like my sister she thinks a pp is great! To be honest, when she gets a pp, shes happier then when i get a genuine one! funny enough andy, my friend who collects stamps does collect replica stamps, as he cant afford the real ones.

thanks.

I agree with you Andy.. I may be a yound collector but I'd like to think that I have some knowledge on the subject.. I've been doing it for 2 1/2 years. {thumb2} I don't keep PP's or AP's either {up}

As fr the stamp thing, obviously they would prefer the real thing, but a picture of it would still show that you likes that stamp. An Ap or PP still shows that you are a fan.

ETA: When you say with young collectors, I don't agree with that. There are experienced collectors who keep AP's and PP's.
My comment regarding younger collectors was saying that its usually those (aka Newbies) who refuse to believe secs/autopens are fake, they stubbornly argue that they're real.

I know some experienced collectors keep PPs and APs, but that wasnt my point.

You're missing the point.

AUTOGRAPH collecting is about collecting AUTOGRAPHS. An autopen is NOT an autograph, neither is a PP or secretarial.

To give a different example -

A stamp collector collects stamps, right? Well if there was a stamp they didnt have in their collection, do you think they'd like a picture of the stamp instead to complete their collection? Of course they wouldnt. Its the same with autograph collecting, if you dont have the real deal, why would you want a fake instead?

Great Point, Andy! What is the fun in getting a fake autograph? You spend time writing letters to celebrities in hopes of them reading your letter and responding to it.. when you get a fake autograph they don't even read your letters most of the time so I don't see why it would be considered a success when you waste time and postage getting a fake autograph that you could print yourself on your computer.

I see so many on here who comment on autopens, preprints, stamps etc."that even though it's stamped etc at least you have his/her autograph" Are you kidding me? That's not an autograph. Has autograph collecting stooped to this low a level with young collectors?
Agreed 110%.

I'd rather get a letter saying "This celebrity can't be bothered...etc", than get a PP, stamp, sec or autopen.
