The only place I've known him to sign for free (and this is going back to his earlier convention appearances where he was charging $10 a signature) was at Disney's Star Wars Weekends, which from this year going forward are no longer happening. The first time I met him at one of the weekends, I'd brought an item to be signed, and asked if he could sign one of the provided event photos. His reaction was to slam his hand on top of the stack of photos and yell, "NO!" He is, to put it kindly, a charm-free man, and I can tell you that you're very unlikely to get a free autograph from him, and last I saw, he had decided his autograph is now worth $50. He does lots of conventions (so his autograph is not in any meaningful way rare or valuable), does not personalize and he takes no genuine interest in meeting fans, so I'd just look for a cheap one on eBay and be done with it.
