From what I've heard, Rickman doesn't like the fact that his autographs are being sold on Ebay. That is probably why he personalizes each and every one of them that he does sign. He probably doesn't resort to PP's and Autopens because it is disappointing to the fans. I'm sure that we all know the feeling when an autopen or PP arrives in the mail. The problem with pre-signing a stack of photos is, once again, Ebay. It also wouldn't feel "right" if he were to sign a bunch of photos and have his secretary add on a personalization.
I think that what he's doing currently is fine. Sure, it may disappoint some people, but you can always try again at a later date when he is less busy. Actually if you look through the feedback forum, there are quite a few successes compared to the failures.
