I agree with Shambler and dgangel.
I only write to people who I admire and really love their work. But I don't write to celebrities who are known to ONLY send out pre-prints and autopens. I will consider writing to someone if they have sent out occasional authentics in the past, even if they're mostly known for pre-prints and autopens.
For example, I love Jennifer Aniston. I think she's a great actress and that she is really funny. But unless she ever starts signing TTM, I won't write to her. Stamps and envelopes are expensive, and I'm not going to waste one for a preprint, which, as Shambler said, has no sentimental value. I like to think that the celebrity I wrote to actually took the time to read my letter and sign something for me, and not that some assistant or fan mail coordinator just picked a pre-print out of a pile and threw it in my SASE.
I don't even keep my pre-prints in the same place as my authentics. My authentics go in a binder where everyone can see them. I leave the binder open to my latest TTM success. My preprints are currently sitting in a pile on my desk. No one ever sees them.
