I just found this thread today, but have been thinking about it ever since I started in February... It just seems too easy to "lose" a few autos before they ever reach the correct person.
There is NO WAY to know if it is happening, and NO WAY to stop it from happening. I always put my own return address on the SASE and all of that, but my envelopes are pretty thin (too keep costs down) and are easy to see through. I can usually tell who I got back before even opening the envelope. So, it is definitely a concern of mine. Especially when you see LOTS of people get back an auto from a specific person and you get nothing (in my case that is Stan Lee)... So, either he just didn't sign mine, or there are some major comic book fans at my Post Office.
Either way, its the risk that comes with this hobby. I have gotten back some REALLY BIG names though, so I would think that if someone was going to steal autos, they would look through my envelopes (since they are so thin) and pick the ones that are worth the most.
Unfortunately, as I said before, there is almost NO WAY to know for sure if your mail is being tampered with, so its better to just keep enjoying the hobby and if you really feel that there is a problem, move your PO box or send them to another address...
