I recently purchased this from autographworld.com under the original auction lot and I have some doubt on it's authenticity. I know If I had any doubt at all I should not of bought it but since it is from autographworld I thought I would take the chance. I have read that Mel changes his signature all the time so I thought I would ask if someone thought this was an authentic and if they have seen this version of his signature before. Thanks
That to me looks nothing like Mel Gibsons signature. I compared it with several authentic examples from different years ranging from late 80's to more recent. His autograph really hasn't changed that drastically. Even the 2 examples autograph world have in their own database are very different than yours. I guess someone could argue that it's a rushed signature, but the shape of the signature, the size of the letters, the angle of the letters it doesn't match to what I know about his signature. I would contact Autograph world and ask them to compare it themselves. They are only human, and they can make mistakes. Especially when they buy lots from people and resell it. Like they sometimes do.
I just contacted autographworld about this and I will let you know what their responce is. I'm sick over this because it cost me over $100.00 for it. I researched Mel Gibson autographs on autographworld website and from what I can tell they have sold 3 or 4 others that have the same type of signature as mine does. I guess I will have to be more carefull when buying online. If this turns out to be a fake I think they need to step up on monitoring what autographs they post on their webstie.

This is the answer I received from one of the owners from autographworld.com.
Jacob, while I agree that the signature you purchased does not match older examples, that is what Mel is giving these days. That was recently signed in NYC. It was obtained by Radio Man, a celebrity in his own right.

Sounds like they are standing by the authenticity of the autograph.
Then it is probably authentic. I don't think they would lie about it. If they made a mistake they would acknowledge it. I am surprised though. I have never seen this version of his autograph. For the last 20 years or so, his signature has had some variation but not that drastic. He always signed his M more like an N, and he always loops the L in Mel. http://www.autographworld.com/sigs/comp ... &ln=Gibson
Who knows, maybe Mel Gibson is signing differently on purpose. I will keep my eye out for this newer version and let you know if it pops up with any other dealers.

Thanks. I agree with you that I don't think they would lie about it. I read an article that Mel hates autograph collectors and sometimes drastically changes his signature to make it almost impossible to authenticate. So until proven otherwise I'm going to believe this is an authentic.

Funny that they mention Radio Man. I used to run into him in NYC whenever I did autographs there. He is quite a character.
