The Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar started his career playing football in a club in his hometown Foreholte. After playing well in his hometown club, he proceeded to a match that was to be held in VV Noordwijk football club of Netherlands, where he was noticed distinctively by the world renowned football club of Netherlands, Ajax Amsterdam. With a successful ranking in Ajax, he was provided with the seniority honor in the team, and there he won the UEFA Cup of the year 1991-92 and the UEFA Champions League of 1995. He won the Best European Goalkeeper award of 1995 there. The loss of UEFA Champions League Finals in 1996 which happened due to a penalty shootout against the4 Italian football club, Juventus could not demoralize him and he won the 1997-98 championships for the Ajax football club defeating De Graafschap by 8-1 overall. He played 226 matches for the team Ajax.
For the team Juventus, he made 66 appearances and that too, serially. But this resulted in losing his position to Gianluigi Buffon. In order to secure
Premiership, he went to Fulham team in the year 2001 with a handsome amount of £7.7 million. For a contract of four years with the team, he altogether made 126 appearances. On 1st of June, 2005, Edwin shifted to Manchester United team with a probable amount of £2 million. The amount was officially not aired. He was recognized by the manager of the Manchester United team Alex Ferguson as the best goalkeeper after Peter Schmeichel, and that’s why Alex wanted him to be in the team.
On 6 May 2007, when Arsenals won defeating Chelsea securing Manchester United’s ninth position, Edwin van der Sar won the best goalkeeper of the year award. He also won nominations for the PFA Team for the year 2006-07. In the same year, after three months, a big milestone in his career was his acting as a main vehicle for the team’s win by defending three successive penalties in a shootout after the no win situation of both the teams- Chelsea and Manchester United with 1-1 draw. There, the Manchester United team won the 16th FA Community Shield.
On October 29, 2008, which was coincidentally his birthday too, he announced his desire to retire from the International Football, which was after the participation of the Netherlands in the 2008 Euro Cup. The first match was won by the team under the captainship of Edwin van der Sar; Italy lost by 3-0, to Netherlands.
