Angela Lansbury Failure

Unread post by bellnorthwood »

I live in the NY area and I spend as much time as possible collecting autographs in person at TV tapings, Broadway plays, and concerts. Angela Lansbury is currently appearing on Broadway in a play called Blithe Spirit. A few weeks ago, I stood outside the theater after the matinee show ended on a Saturday. After a few collectors had gathered around the barricades, a guard announced that Ms. Lansbury would not leave the theatre between performances. So today, I decided to try to get her autograph before the show. Around 12:45-1:00, Ms. Lansbury arrived and announced "Sweetheart, I never stop coming in.........only on the way out." I apologized for bothering her and went on my way, but I'm wondering. If she doesn't sign on the way in.......and doesn't exit between shows..........then do I really have to stay up until 11:00PM just to get an autograph? NO THANKS!

:( Bummer.......I have actually heard that one before. It wasn't Angela but I've met bands that only sign after the show.Beforehand is apparently their downtime.I understand how you feel though.I wouldn't wait afterwards either.Sometimes afterwards it's so packed you cannot even get near the person so meeting them beforehand is much better.

I'm sorry but no great star ever comes out between shows. Hardly any actors/actresses come out during matinees in general...they've got busy lives and need to do stuff in that 2 hours they have to themselves - whether it's rest for the next performance of paying customers or rehersing...whatever.

Hardly any Broadway performers sign before shows; sorry to put it this way (although I can't seem to find a nicer way), most of the actors/actresses find it creepy to have people waiting for them outside the theatre -- because they know you're not a paying attendee of the performance (which is why if anyone is nice enough to sign for you beforehand, always mention you're going to the show if you actually are).

Lansbury's an international "super"-star (loosely,...I'd say a lot of the general population knows who she is)...it's lucky enough that she signs considering the number of Broadway actresses/actors that don't.

Best of luck if you try again. See if they have a "matinee" on Sunday -- meaning a 3 PM show that's the only one that day (most shows have this). That'd be a lot earlier for you!
WONDERLAND:Alice's New Musical Adventure enjoyed a short, but sweet run on Broadway in Spring of 2011!
