I met Ryan Adams, Jon Graboff and Neal Casal at a very small concert venue in 2008 when I was about nine years old. I've grown up my whole life listening to Ryan and the Cardinal's music, and I remember feeling like it all was a dream, that it couldn't really be happening, I couldn't possibly be meeting them. They were the first "celebrities" I've ever met, although in my mind they're regular people, only they're super-humanly and unbelievably talented. My parents had luck in their previous years at concerts meeting whoever they were going to see by wandering around behind the stadium and venue. They really thought we would have luck because this place was tiny- and I mean TINY. Sure enough, as we were walking around waiting for the show to start, we could hear the band performing. This part I do remember the most- hearing Ryan sing so soulfully and real, and that was just crazy for me. This was the music I had (and still do) grow up to. It was just all kind of surreal to me, since I was my first concert where I wasn't a little baby that had no clue what was happening.
So as we walked around, we ran into Jon Graboff (he was pretty easy to find with his neon yellow shoes that we knew he would have). We followed him, talked, got his autograph, and asked him if there was any way that I could meet Ryan. He said that it was possible, and then brought us around a back door. There were a couple other people there, maybe five at the most just waiting for the show to start. Jon opened the door and told us to wait. About a minute later he came out with Ryan and Neal Casal, who both signed my book I had brought. They were all so surprised that I was a fan of them; I remember just running around after meeting them, in shock, smiling beyond belief, thinking "that could not have just happened."
Later we did catch Ryan just walking down the street unrecognized by anyone besides my mom and me, but we didn't go after him because we had already met him and wanted to give him his privacy because he was just going to eat or something. The show was amazing, as we all knew it would be. That cold September night will always live in my heart and in the back of my mind, meeting the people who had made the music to my life.
