I don't bother personally, links work fine, but it will be the img tag button which will do it. Personally it's more of a pain when people do loads of direct uploads as it makes using the forum tedious, especially when people then respond to your post by quoting the whole thing. The same with big signatures, they drive me mad as they are pointless and just fill the forum. There's also the fact that the forum sometimes goes down due to bandwith usage, and I think from memory the amount of images directly uploaded can affect that. Imageshack etc are easy enough to use and link to.
