Please excuse my ignorance, but what is a 53' TOPPS??? A collector's card?
Aside from that, great success! Congrats! I don't know s**t about baseball (I'm not American!), but even I have heard about Whitey. Great photo, too!
Fingers crossed you'll get your thingy back!

53' Topps is a 1953 Topps baseball card. The card alone is worth anywhere from $50-$125 pending condition.

Which means that getting it autographed (written on) would be a really stupid move.

That's down to the opinion of the OP, but I wouldn't have risked that in the mail anyway, not without checking in advance that it would be signed AND tracking it both ways.

Mr. Ford is excellent TTM and I hadn't seen anything but 100% successes, figured there was no risk. Surely it fell out mistakenly.

Opinion has nothing to do with it. Getting a card autographed is considered writing on it by card collectors, dealers, and graders. Having him sign it would have the same effect on the value of the card as scribbling on it yourself.

Very true; unless you spend the money to have it officially authenticated by a reputable company.
