and received a pre-print photo and a personalised letter explaining that due to his current commitments he's unable to personally sign anything at the moment (see link below)

You can't really call a preprint a success it's just a big FAIL!!!
Not surprising from him tho he's not very pleasant too his fans. Even if you saw him in the street he would walk away and ignore you if you asked him.

A pre-print is a success because at least I received something signed from him! Don't be jealous and call it a fail.

I wouldn't call it either a success or a failure.
Yes, you received a response which is great but it's NOT signed by David Jason so I'd call it a disappointment.

You never received anything from him at all. You received something from his agent in London which you could of photocopied yourself from your laptop. He never signed it or touched that photo you fool.
