everything to do with politics in your country - I don't know how you can think anything to the contrary. Would the Republicans choose a presidential candidate who is an American Indian, who believes in the spirits of nature rather than a big man in the sky with angels at his feet?! No, because they'd lose the election immediately. Because, America wants a god-fearing Christian, nevermind people's human right to choose what they want to believe.
Would the Democrats choose a Sheik with a turbin wrapped round his head who again, didn't believe in the man in the sky with his angels? No, the Democrats would lose immediately, because America strictly want a Christian. Having an Atheist, Muslim, Hindu, Buddist or anything 'along those lines'
would be to Americans, like having Vladimir Putin in charge.
Your country is run by fundamentalist Christians, and thus until you provide evidence that suggests otherwise, I can't believe that religion is not a massive factor in the U.S. On a lesser point of relevance, I'm shocked to see that teeny bopper superstar Zac Efron has achieved the fame he has when - shock horror - he's AGNOSTIC. He was raised without religion. I'm suprised the poor guy hasn't been burnt at the stakes yet!

That makes no sense, but yet again...it's how it is now. I have a feeling that people in the south mostly will hate to have a black president. That's why there are assassination attempts now from them.
